Do you know how to recycle correctly?

Millions of tons of waste are generated every year and although more than 75% could be recycled, only 30% is recycled. The low recycling rate is a real problem that is often linked to the lack of knowledge of the recycling process of each material.

In this infographic we explain everything you need to know to recycle properly.

Results of the first half of 2022

This year is proving to be very difficult, with relentlessly soaring inflation, extreme weather conditions that are unfavourable for our raw materials, consumers starting to watch their spending and change their shopping habits, and a severe shortage of factory personnel in North America, France and northern Europe.

In spite of all this, our Group achieved satisfactory results during the period, largely thanks to a combination of our hallmark features, such as a strong, highly diversified supply chain, the implementation of measures to achieve savings, growing investment in advertising and innovation and our strong brands, offering a broad array of differentiated products, with which we are able to gain consumer loyalty.

How to turn your kitchen into a sustainable space

Measures to protect the environment must be carried out in all areas, including our daily life on a personal level. Here are some tips to make your kitchen a sustainable space.

1. Betting on seasonal products

By consuming these products we achieve a triple benefit:

  • We respect its life cycle, without forcing its cultivation with fertilizers.
  • We help local production and economy
  • We mitigate our carbon footprint by avoiding long-distance transportation.

2. Choose sustainable materials

  • Plastic takes 500 years on average to decompose
  • Single-use utensils increase the amount of waste we generate
  • Glass and ceramic containers are the most environmentally friendly alternative
  • Cloth bags and napkins reduce our environmental impact

3. Uses triple-A appliances

Efficient appliances achieve considerable savings in water and electricity. Energy excellence is in those appliances with A+++ label. In addition, use small tips to make a responsible use of them. For example:

  • Optimizes dishwasher space
  • Locate the refrigerator separate from other appliances, such as the oven.
  • Use tap aerators

4. Fighting food waste

Incorrect food storage is one of the major causes of food waste. Keep in mind that:

  • Fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs and legumes keep well between 6 and 10 degrees Celsius.
  • Meat, fish and dairy desserts need to be at 4 degrees.
  • Sorting by expiration date, both in the refrigerator and in the pantry, will help you consume foods with a shorter shelf life first.

And don’t forget to prepare trash cooking recipes at least once a week.

You can now start mitigating your carbon footprint. Are you ready?

Ebro Group results: first quarter 2022

In the first quarter of this year we have seen how, far from easing after 2021, inflation has become even steeper due to the new challenges arising in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Although the Ebro group has no operations in those countries, the collateral effects are very strong and we are coming up against higher extraordinary costs as a result of: (i) new waves of inflation in raw and auxiliary materials, transport, energy and labour costs; and (ii) the transport strike in Spain over the higher fuel costs. Against this backdrop, our latest estimates point to cost inflation for this year of €234.4 million, on top of the inflation already suffered in 2020 and 2021.

But in spite of all, we have achieved positive results thanks to the soundness of our brands, a strong, highly diversified supply chain and the business consistency of our Group. We place our trust in these strengths to weather this complicated situation with certain guarantees.

II edition of the Sustainability & Environmental Awards

The Ebro Foundation has celebrated this year the second edition of the Sustainability and Environmental Awards, a competition to promote internal talent in the field of sustainability by identifying projects that contribute to achieving the objectives of our General Sustainability Plan HEADING TOWARDS 2030.

This new edition has confirmed the consolidation of this initiative and the commitment to sustainability within the Group. There have been very interesting and innovative projects presented by all the participants subsidiaries: Riviana Foods, Boost Nutrition, Ebro Foods Netherland, Ebro India, Lassie, Garofalo, Tilda, S&B Herba Foods and Risella.

All of them have presented excellent proposals aimed at the efficient use of natural resources in their production processes through renewable energies; as well as initiatives on reuse of waste water, reduction of emissions, sustainability agriculture, search for vegetable alternatives to meat, reduction in packaging materials, retention of talent, etc.

According to the evaluation criteria established in the announcement of the awards, the winning projects were the ones presented by the companies Ebro India and Tilda, in first position, and the company Herba Ingredients, who won the second prize.

Ebro India and Tilda jointly presented a sustainable agriculture programme in 450 Basmati rice lands in Haryana, India, for water conservation and greenhouse gas (methane) reduction through the promotion of alternative wet drying (AWD) by 2022.

The final goal is to develop an Integrated Sustainability Plan for basmati rice producers that deals with these two challenges (highly relevant for climate change) and to expand it over the next three years to all our basmati rice suppliers in that country.

Finally, Herba Ingredients project consists on the development of meat substitutes based on the texture of fava bean proteins (produced with fava beans grown in Holland), an innovation of Herba Ingredients that is completely new on the market. This initiative will allow, on one hand, the replacement of animal protein in certain meat-based products with a 100% vegetable alternative and on the other hand, to transform the agriculture in Netherlands by increasing the cultivation of fava beans, which will contribute to the reduction of emissions and environmental preservation of the environment.

We congratulate to the winners and to all the participants for their magnificent proposals and their commitment to the sustainable growth of the Ebro Group.

We encourage you all to start thinking about new ideas for next year!
